1. Who we are, and what these terms cover
Stablemate is a monitoring service for scheduled jobs. These terms are between you and [operating entity, company number and registered address — to be completed before launch] (“Stablemate”, “we”, “us”), and they govern the managed service we run at stablemate.dev only.
By creating an account or using the service you accept these terms. If you are agreeing on behalf of a company or other organisation, you confirm you are allowed to bind it, and “you” means that organisation.
Stablemate is also open-source software you can run yourself. Section 7 explains why these terms do not apply to that.
2. What the service does
You register a monitor for a scheduled job. Your job calls a unique ping URL each time it runs. If a ping does not arrive within the interval and grace period you configured, or if your job reports a failure, we record an incident and email you. When the job pings successfully again, we email you that it recovered. We also keep a history of pings and a per-day uptime record.
That is the whole product. Stablemate watches for the absence of a signal you send us — it does not run your jobs, cannot fix them, and cannot tell you anything your jobs do not report.
3. Your account
- You need a working email address. Alerts, verification and account notices go to it, so keep it current.
- You are responsible for everything done through your account, and for keeping your password safe.
- Ping tokens and API keys are secrets. Anyone holding a monitor’s ping token can mark it healthy; anyone holding an API key can read and change your monitors. Treat them like passwords, keep them out of public repositories, and rotate them if they leak.
- The service is not intended for children. You must be at least 16 to create an account.
- You can delete your account at any time from your account page. See section 9.
4. Acceptable use
Don’t:
- use the service unlawfully, or to monitor anything unlawful;
- probe, scan, overload or attempt to break the service, or try to reach data that isn’t yours — including guessing other people’s ping tokens or API keys;
- use the ping endpoint as anything other than a heartbeat — it is not a general-purpose logging, storage or messaging endpoint;
- send us personal data, credentials or other sensitive information inside monitor names, project names or reported error messages (see the Privacy Policy — we store what you send, verbatim);
- resell or white-label the hosted service, or share one account across separate organisations to work around plan limits.
The ping endpoint and the sign-in and API surfaces are rate-limited. The limits are set well above any legitimate schedule, but automated retry loops can hit them; a throttled request is rejected, not billed.
5. Plans, payment and cancellation
Plans
- Free — up to 5 monitors, no card required, for as long as you want it.
- Pro — up to 100 monitors, billed monthly in advance.
Paused monitors still count towards your plan’s allowance; only deleting one frees the slot. Prices are exclusive of VAT and any other sales tax, which is calculated and added at checkout where it applies.
Payment
Payments are taken by Stripe. Card details go straight to Stripe and never touch our servers. Your subscription renews automatically each month until it is cancelled. If a payment fails, Stripe retries it on its usual schedule; see “If a payment fails” below.
Cancelling — there are two routes, and they behave differently
- Downgrading inside Stablemate (Billing → Downgrade to Free) cancels your subscription immediately. You move to the Free plan there and then, and we do not refund the unused part of the month. If you have more than 5 monitors at that point you must choose which 5 stay active; the rest are suspended, not deleted, and come back if you upgrade again.
- Cancelling in the Stripe billing portal (Billing → Manage payment details) takes effect on the schedule Stripe’s portal is configured for — normally at the end of the period you have already paid for. You keep Pro until then, and your plan drops to Free when Stripe tells us the subscription has ended.
Either way, cancelling never deletes your monitors or their history. To delete your data, delete your account (section 9).
If a payment fails, or a subscription ends unexpectedly
Your plan drops to Free, but nothing is suspended straight away — a billing blip must never silently stop your monitoring. Instead, if you are over the Free allowance, you get 7 days to choose which 5 monitors stay active. Everything keeps running during that window. If the window passes without a choice, we keep your 5 oldest monitors active and suspend the rest. Suspended monitors are retained, never deleted, and reactivate if you go back to Pro.
Refunds and price changes
We don’t offer pro-rata refunds for a mid-month downgrade. If something goes materially wrong on our side, email us — we would rather sort it out than argue about it. Nothing here affects any statutory rights you have as a consumer. We may change our prices with at least 30 days’ notice by email; the new price applies from your next renewal, and you can cancel before it takes effect.
6. Availability — this is not a guarantee
Stablemate is provided on a best-efforts basis. There is no SLA, no uptime guarantee and no service-level agreement of any kind, on any plan. We say this bluntly because of what the product is: a monitoring tool creates a temptation to treat it as a safety net, and it is not one.
Specifically, we do not promise that:
- the service will be available or uninterrupted — we may take it down for maintenance, sometimes without notice;
- every ping will be recorded, or recorded promptly;
- every alert will be sent, delivered, or delivered quickly — email delivery depends on third parties and on your own mail provider, neither of which we control;
- an alert that is not sent means your job is healthy.
Do not make Stablemate the only thing standing between you and a serious loss. If a job matters that much, it needs more than one safeguard.
7. Self-hosting and the licence
The Stablemate application is released under the GNU AGPL v3. The companion Ruby gem is released separately, under the deliberately more permissive MIT licence, so you can add it to a closed-source application. You are free to run your own instance under those licences, with no account with us, no monitor limits and no payment.
These terms cover only the service we host. If you self-host, your rights and obligations come from those licences, not from this page; we provide no support, no warranty and no service for your instance, and we receive none of your data. Each licence’s own disclaimer of warranty applies to the software itself.
8. Your data
What we collect, why, how long we keep it and who processes it on our behalf is set out in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.
Your monitoring data is yours. We use it to run the service for you and for nothing else — we do not sell it, and we do not use it to train anything. You can export your monitors at any time through the API, or ask us for a copy.
9. Suspension and termination
You can close your account at any time from Account → Delete this account. That cancels any active subscription immediately, with no refund for the unused part of the month, and permanently deletes your account and its data as described in the Privacy Policy. It cannot be undone.
We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms, that we reasonably believe is being used unlawfully or abusively, or where we are required to by law. Where it is practical and lawful to do so we will tell you first and give you a chance to put it right. We may also stop offering the managed service entirely, in which case we will give you reasonable notice and a fair refund of anything you have paid for a period you will not get.
10. Changes to the service and to these terms
The product will change — features get added, and occasionally removed. If we make a change that materially reduces what you are paying for, or a material change to these terms, we will email you at least 30 days beforehand. Continuing to use the service after a change takes effect means you accept it; if you don’t, cancel or delete your account.
11. Liability
The service is provided “as is”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we exclude all implied warranties and conditions.
We are not liable for:
- loss of profit, revenue, business, goodwill, anticipated savings or opportunity;
- loss or corruption of data;
- indirect or consequential loss of any kind;
- any loss arising because an alert was missed, late, wrong or undelivered, or because a monitor was not watching what you assumed it was watching.
Where we are liable, our total liability to you for all claims in any 12-month period is limited to the greater of the fees you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose, and £100.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.
12. General
If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands. Not enforcing something straight away doesn’t mean we have given it up. You may not transfer your rights under these terms without our consent; we may transfer ours if the service is sold or reorganised, and will tell you if that happens. Nobody other than you and us has any rights under these terms.
13. Governing law
These terms and any dispute arising out of them are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere in the UK or in the EU, you keep the benefit of any mandatory protections of your home country’s law, and may bring proceedings there.
14. Contact
